The Discovery - The rink

Expedition: British Arctic Expedition 1875-76. Leader: George Strong Nares (1831-1915). Original format: Lantern slide. Expedition members skate on an ice rink made by clearing away snow and pouring water on the rough ice underneath. An ice arch marks the entrance to it in the middle distance. Behind are a theatre and a smithy made out of ice next to the sailing ship HMS Discovery moored to the ice
