Shackleton's third attempt on the South Pole ended when 'Endurance' was crushed in the pack ice and sank, leaving the men adrift on an ice floe. Shackleton and five others made an epic boat journey in 'James Caird' to South Georgia to rescue the men left on Elephant Island.
